One of the most iconic leather jackets in the TOYS McCOY collection, the TYPE A-2 “V.HILTS” pays tribute to legendary actor Steve McQueen and his unforgettable performance in the 1963 classic film The Great Escape.

Inspired by the A-2 flight jacket worn by McQueen in his portrayal of Captain Virgil Hilts, a U.S. Army Air Forces officer, this exceptional reproduction captures the distinctive character, timeless appeal, and rugged authenticity of one of cinema’s most recognizable leather jackets.

For Hiroshi Okamoto, the founder of TOYS McCOY, Steve McQueen and The Great Escape have always represented a profound source of inspiration. Their influence can be seen throughout the brand’s philosophy and its unwavering dedication to recreating historically significant garments with remarkable attention to detail.

The TYPE A-2 “V.HILTS” stands as a true expression of that passion.

Rather than simply reproducing a standard World War II-era A-2 flight jacket, TOYS McCOY has focused on capturing the unique appearance and character of the jacket worn by McQueen on screen.

From the rich coloration of the leather to the carefully considered proportions and distinctive details, every element reflects the brand’s commitment to authenticity and craftsmanship.

The jacket is constructed from carefully selected horsehide leather, finished in a deep, rich seal brown that beautifully complements its classic military styling.

Horsehide is renowned for its durability, distinctive grain, and ability to develop exceptional character through years of wear.

Initially offering a substantial and structured feel, the leather gradually softens and conforms to the wearer’s body, developing natural creases, subtle variations in color, and a unique patina that tells the story of its owner.

This remarkable aging process is one of the greatest pleasures of owning a genuine horsehide leather jacket.

On the left chest, the jacket features the distinctive “V.HILTS” leather nameplate, faithfully reflecting the memorable detail seen on McQueen’s jacket in The Great Escape.

Crafted from natural vegetable-tanned leather, the nameplate features stamped lettering and an aged appearance, adding an authentic vintage character to the overall design.

The left shoulder is decorated with an “ARMY AIR CORPS” decal, representing the historical identity of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Carefully finished to evoke the appearance of an original military garment, this detail contributes to the jacket’s unmistakable period character.

Inside, the jacket features a cotton broadcloth lining inspired by the materials traditionally used in original A-2 flight jackets.

Additional military-style markings, including “A.A.F.” and identification details associated with Virgil Hilts, further emphasize the connection to the film and its historical setting.

Even the woven rayon label reflects the visual character of original World War II-era flight jackets, demonstrating TOYS McCOY’s dedication to details that may remain unseen during everyday wear.

Beyond its historical inspiration, the TYPE A-2 “V.HILTS” offers a timeless silhouette that remains as appealing today as it was during the golden age of military aviation.

Its clean, functional design pairs effortlessly with classic denim jeans, military chinos, workwear trousers, and other traditional American casual garments.

The combination of beautifully finished horsehide, authentic military-inspired detailing, and understated styling gives this jacket a distinctive presence without relying on unnecessary decoration.

As the years pass, the leather will continue to develop its own personality, becoming increasingly comfortable while retaining the unmistakable character of a classic A-2 flight jacket.

More than simply a reproduction of a vintage military garment, the TYPE A-2 “V.HILTS” represents the enduring legacy of Steve McQueen, the cinematic history of The Great Escape, and the uncompromising craftsmanship for which TOYS McCOY is renowned.

It is a jacket created not merely to be worn, but to be appreciated, experienced, and enjoyed for many years to come.

A true signature piece from TOYS McCOY, the TYPE A-2 “V.HILTS” embodies the spirit of classic American aviation, vintage authenticity, and timeless masculine style.

An exceptional leather jacket that will only become more personal and rewarding with every passing year.
